# 'The Truth' Is A Person, Not An Organisation

*John 14:6 / John 14:17 / 1 John 5:20*

## Doorstep Question

> "You mentioned earlier you 'came into the Truth' in 1995. Could I ask a gentle question — when Jesus said 'I am the way, the TRUTH, and the life' in John 14:6, do you think He was pointing to Himself, or to an organisation?"

## JW Claim

'The Truth' is a designation Jehovah's Witnesses use for the body of
accurate Bible teaching restored through Jehovah's spirit-directed
organisation in the last days. To 'come into the Truth' is to associate
with God's earthly organisation as one of Jehovah's Witnesses, which is
the only channel of accurate spiritual instruction in our era.

## Strategy

This is not a technical argument — it is a vocabulary diagnostic. Watch for the phrase 'the Truth' as a noun referring to the organisation: 'I came into the Truth,' 'I left the Truth,' 'my parents are still in the Truth.' That usage is not biblical. In Scripture, 'the truth' has three referents: (1) the person of Jesus Christ — 'I am the truth' (John 14:6); (2) the Holy Spirit — 'the Spirit of truth' (John 14:17, 15:26, 16:13); (3) the apostolic gospel itself — 'the word of the truth, the gospel' (Colossians 1:5, Galatians 2:5,14). Never is 'the truth' an organisation. Ask kindly: 'When you say you came into the Truth, did you come to Jesus Christ — or to an organisation? The Bible uses the word the way Jesus did.'

## Key Insight

In Scripture the Truth is a Person, the Spirit, and the gospel — never an institution. When 'the Truth' becomes a name for an organisation, the organisation has placed itself where Christ stands. That is the category error at the heart of Watchtower vocabulary.

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "Of course Jesus is the truth — but he uses an earthly organisation in these last days, and that organisation teaches accurate truth."

**Counter:** Notice the shift: from 'Jesus is the truth' to 'the organisation teaches accurate truth.' Both sentences could be true and still the JW phrase 'I came into the Truth' would be misplaced — because the Truth is not the body of teaching but the Teacher Himself. 1 John 5:20 says, 'we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.' Being 'in the truth' is being in Christ — not in an organisation. The vocabulary of Watchtower culture replaces 'in Christ' (Paul's most common phrase for a saved person) with 'in the Truth.' That substitution should make us pause.

### Response 2

**JW says:** "The apostles spoke of those who 'walked in the truth' — 2 John 4 and 3 John 3-4. That is the same usage."

**Counter:** Beautiful — let's look at those verses. 2 John 4: 'I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth.' 3 John 3: 'I was overjoyed when some brothers came and testified about your loyalty to the truth, even as you go on walking in the truth.' Now ask: in those verses, was the apostle calling the readers into an organisation, or into the apostolic gospel — the message about Jesus Christ? Read on. In 2 John 7 he warns about those who deny that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh: that is the truth-content. In 3 John 11 he warns to 'imitate what is good.' The 'truth' the apostles use is the gospel-message about Christ — not membership in any one community. If 'the Truth' in your vocabulary means the Watchtower organisation, that is a meaning the apostles never gave the word.

### Response 3

**JW says:** "Jesus said 'I am the way, the truth, and the life — no one comes to the Father except through me.' We agree completely with John 14:6."

**Counter:** I'm so glad — because if Jesus is THE way and THE truth and THE life, and no one comes to the Father except through Him, then coming to the Father is coming through Christ, not through the Governing Body. The 'mediator-restriction' teaching — that Christ is mediator only for the 144,000 anointed and the rest must approach Jehovah through the organisation — collapses John 14:6 into something Jesus did not say. Either Jesus is THE way for everyone, or He isn't THE way at all. The Watchtower has put an intermediate mediator between Jesus and the 'other sheep.' But John 14:6 is stark and exclusive: no one comes to the Father except through Him.

### Response 4

**JW says:** "Jesus also said 'the truth will set you free' — John 8:32. The truth that frees us is accurate Bible knowledge."

**Counter:** John 8:32 is one of the clearest passages on this. Read three more verses up: John 8:36 — 'If the SON sets you free, you will be free indeed.' The truth that frees us is not propositional knowledge; it is the Son Himself. Then John 8:31 — 'if you hold to MY teaching, you are really my disciples.' His teaching, not an organisation's reading of his teaching. Jesus consistently puts Himself — His person and His words — at the centre of 'the truth.' When 'the Truth' becomes a synonym for an institution, the institution has stepped into the place Jesus claimed.

## What to Avoid

Don't mock the JW vocabulary — it is the air they breathe. Don't say 'you've been brainwashed.' Just notice the word out loud, kindly, and ask which referent Scripture uses. The goal is to plant a small vocabulary-doubt: maybe 'in the Truth' should mean 'in Christ.'

## Homework

Ask the JW at the door: 'When you say you came into the Truth — what did you come into? A teaching, an organisation, or a Person?' Read John 14:6, John 14:17, 1 John 5:20 with them. Ask: 'Could the Truth be a Person?'
