# We Didn't Invent the Trinity — We Summarised What God Revealed

*A summary of three biblical revelations, not a philosophical speculation*

## Doorstep Question

> "When the JW says "the word Trinity isn't in the Bible, so you invented it", the answer isn't to find the word — the word *Jehovah* isn't in the Bible spelled that way either. May I show you the three biblical facts the doctrine is summarising?"

## JW Claim

The word "Trinity" never appears in the Bible. It was invented by
Catholic theologians at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, then formalised
by Constantinople in 381. If Jesus or the apostles had taught it, they
would have said so plainly. Trinitarians read it back into the text
because Constantine wanted to unify the empire — not because the Bible
teaches it.

## Strategy

The objection has two layers — the linguistic ("the word isn't there") and the historical ("the doctrine was invented later"). Address the linguistic first: Christians don't claim the word *Trinity* is in the Bible. We claim the *content* is. The Trinity is the necessary synthesis of three biblical revelations, each independently affirmed: (1) there is one God; (2) Father, Son, and Spirit are each called God; (3) they are personally distinct. Like the JW already does with the word "Jehovah" — using a 16th-century vowel-pointing of YHWH that nowhere appears in that spelling in the Hebrew text — the *concept* is in Scripture even where the precise term isn't. Then address the historical: pre-Nicene fathers like Ignatius (c. 110), Justin Martyr (c. 150), Irenaeus (c. 180), and Tertullian (c. 200, who coined the Latin "trinitas") all taught Father, Son, and Spirit as one God before Constantine was born.

## Key Insight

The Christian doesn't deduce the Trinity from philosophy. The doctrine is the summary of three biblical revelations — one God, three persons each fully God, three personally distinct — that Scripture itself brings together. The name is later; the content is apostolic.

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "Show me one verse that says 'three persons in one God'."

**Counter:** Matthew 28:19 is the closest. Jesus commands baptism "in the name" — singular — "of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" — three persons. One name, three persons. 2 Corinthians 13:14 follows the same triadic pattern: "the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit." The triadic structure runs through the New Testament (Eph 4:4-6; 1 Cor 12:4-6; 1 Pet 1:2). The verse you're asking for is Matthew 28:19 — which uses the singular "name" of three persons.

### Response 2

**JW says:** "But Constantine invented the Trinity at Nicaea."

**Counter:** Constantine called the council, but didn't write the theology. Tertullian had already used the word *trinitas* in around 200 AD — more than a hundred years before Nicaea. Ignatius (around 110 AD) wrote of "Jesus Christ our God". Justin Martyr (around 150 AD) defended the deity of the Son. Irenaeus (around 180 AD) named the "three persons" in his Against Heresies. Nicaea didn't invent the Trinity — it defended what was already taught against Arius' *new* teaching that the Son was created. The Watchtower's claim that Constantine fabricated the doctrine relies on the *Should You Believe in the Trinity?* brochure, which collapses 200+ years of pre-Nicene Christian writing into one Roman political moment. Read Ignatius for yourself; you'll find Trinitarian theology a century before the council.

### Response 3

**JW says:** "If it's that important, why isn't it stated more clearly in one place?"

**Counter:** It is — Matthew 28:19, 2 Corinthians 13:14, 1 John 5:7 (older manuscripts notwithstanding), 1 Peter 1:2. But more importantly, the New Testament isn't a systematic theology textbook. It's occasional letters and four narratives. Most apostolic doctrines — original sin, justification by faith, the deity of Christ, the personhood of the Spirit — are summarised by the church from multiple texts. We don't expect a single verse to spell out the doctrine of the resurrection either, but Scripture teaches it plainly across many. The Trinity is the same.

### Response 4

**JW says:** "Doesn't this make Christians invent doctrines whenever they want?"

**Counter:** It would, if we could invent freely. But the Trinity is constrained by what the Bible explicitly says: one God (Deut 6:4); Father is God (John 6:27); Son is God (John 20:28, Heb 1:8); Spirit is God (Acts 5:3-4); the three are distinct (Matt 3:16-17, John 17:5). The doctrine is the only summary that holds all five biblical truths together without contradicting any of them. Removing any of the three persons collapses one biblical truth; collapsing the three into one person collapses another. The Trinity is the constrained summary, not the inventive one.

## What to Avoid

Don't fight the JW on the historical claim by quoting modern scholars — they will appeal to *Should You Believe in the Trinity?* and we will be in citation tennis. Quote the ante-Nicene fathers directly, even one line each (Ignatius, Tertullian). The primary sources are short, accessible, and unambiguous. Also avoid implying that the word *Jehovah* is illegitimate just because it's a later construction — the JW takes that personally and the analogy gets lost in the offence.

## Homework

Read Matthew 28:18-20 carefully. Count the persons named — three. Then read "in the name" in Greek — *to onoma*, singular. One name, three persons. Ask: what kind of being has one name shared by three?
