God Is Love — From Eternity, Or Not At All

1 John 4:8 / Malachi 3:6 / John 17:24
Deity of Christ Strong Tone-safe
Doorstep Question
"The Bible says God IS love () — that's not something He chose to start being, it's part of who He is. And the Bible says God doesn't change (). So here's my honest question: if Jesus is a created being, what was Jehovah loving for the eternity before He created Jesus? "
JW Claim

Jehovah is one Person. He created Jesus as His firstborn son. Before Jesus
existed, Jehovah simply existed alone — eternally self-sufficient. The
Trinity is unnecessary; one God is enough.

Strategy

Lay two doctrines side by side that the JW already affirms: God is love () and God does not change ( — "I, Jehovah, have not changed"). Then walk them through the implication: love requires an object. You cannot love nothing. If God's very nature IS love, and that nature is unchanging from eternity past, then there must always have been a beloved Other within God. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit eternally loving one another ( — "you loved me before the founding of the world") is not a Greek philosophy import — it is the only Christology that preserves both immutability and the love-nature of God. The JW position forces Jehovah to BECOME loving once He created the Son. That is mutability, and it contradicts .

Key Insight

Either God's love started when He made Jesus (so He changed and became loving — contradicting ), or love has always been internal to God's eternal life, which requires more than one Person within the one God. There is no third option.

Likely JW Response 1

Jehovah loved His own attributes / loved Himself before creating Jesus.

Your Counter

Self-love is not what 1 John means. The whole context () describes God's love as outward-flowing, sacrificial, sent — "God sent his only-begotten Son into the world." Narcissistic self-affection is not the model. And besides — if "loving His attributes" satisfies the requirement, why did He bother creating anything? The Bible says He ALWAYS loved the Son: "you loved me before the founding of the world" (). That is pre-creation love between Persons — exactly what the Trinity describes.

Likely JW Response 2

God doesn't need anyone to love. He's self-sufficient.

Your Counter

Agreed — God is self-sufficient. That is the whole point. If God needs to create in order to be loving, then He is not self-sufficient — His love depends on something outside Himself. The Trinity solves this perfectly: God's love is complete within Himself, eternally, between Father, Son, and Spirit. Creation overflows from that fullness; it doesn't supply it.

Likely JW Response 3

This is just Greek philosophy you're imposing on Scripture.

Your Counter

This argument doesn't come from Plato. It comes from holding two Bible verses together at the same time. says God IS love. says God does not change. If you accept both, you have already accepted what the Trinity is trying to describe. The historic church didn't invent the Trinity to please philosophers — Athanasius defended it AGAINST the Greek philosophical preferences of his day, which actually preferred Arius's position (one supreme God, one created mediator) because it sounded more reasonable to pagan minds.

Likely JW Response 4

But '1+1+1=1' is bad math. How does eternal love change that?

Your Counter

The math objection assumes 'persons' and 'being' are the same unit on both sides of the equation. They aren't — argument 252 (trinity-math-mockery-response) unpacks the category error in detail. But notice also: the Watchtower cheerfully affirms that Jehovah has many distinct attributes — love, justice, mercy, wisdom — within one essence. That's the same 'one in essence, more than one in [category]' move structurally. If 'one in essence and many in attributes' is not bad maths, why is 'one in essence and three in persons' bad maths? The eternal-love argument simply names which category Scripture requires: not three attributes loving themselves (narcissism is not love), but three Persons loving one another ( — 'you loved me before the founding of the world'). The maths is consistent either way; what changes is whether love within God is real love (between Persons) or just a label on a single Person's attributes.

Likely JW Response 5

We can't fully understand God anyway.

Your Counter

That's true, and Christians agree. But "we can't fully understand" is different from "what we do see contradicts itself." The Trinity is mysterious in the same way that infinity is mysterious in mathematics — not understood completely, but not contradictory either. The JW position, by contrast, makes Jehovah's nature CHANGE — which is not mystery, it is contradiction with .

What to Avoid

Don't make this the FIRST argument at the door. It's a follow-up after they've already softened on John 1:1 or Hebrews 1. It works best as a closer — the moment when they realize their theology has a logical hole.

Homework to Assign

Read slowly. Notice every verb attached to love is outward-directed: sent, gave, manifested, loved one another. Then read . Ask: how does the Watchtower preserve both?
