# Two Matches, One Candle — How Three Persons Create as One

*Causal overdetermination and opera ad extra sunt indivisa*

## Doorstep Question

> "When Isaiah 44:24 says Jehovah stretched out the heavens alone, and John 1:3 says all things came to be through the Son, the JW reads a contradiction. May I show you why those two verses sit together perfectly once you understand what theologians call concurrent action?"

## JW Claim

Isaiah 44:24 says Jehovah created alone — "by myself", "with no one beside
me". If Jesus helped create, then either Jehovah lied, or Jesus is just
another creature like the angels. The Trinity tries to have it both ways:
three persons all responsible for creation, when the text says only one.

## Strategy

Many JWs land their case at Isaiah 44:24 as a closing move — and most Trinitarians have only attack-form answers (turning the verse to imply Jesus must be Jehovah). What is missing in most apologetics is the positive defence: explaining how three persons can each be fully and concurrently the Creator without breaking Isaiah 44:24. Use Craig's candle illustration — two matches striking a wick at the same instant, each one fully sufficient on its own; the candle is fully lit by both, not partly by each. Then introduce opera ad extra sunt indivisa — the external operations of the Trinity are undivided. The three persons act with one will, one act, one effect. So when Isaiah 44:24 says "alone", it speaks against any rival outside the one Godhead — not against the three persons of that one Godhead.

## Key Insight

Two matches lighting one candle don't each contribute fifty per cent. Each is fully sufficient; both act concurrently. That is how three persons of one God create together — without partition, without rivalry, without contradicting "Jehovah alone".

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "But the text is clear — 'alone', 'with no one beside me'. You're playing word games."

**Counter:** The "alone" of Isaiah 44:24 contrasts the one true God with idols and false gods who claimed to be his rivals. It is not contrasting the Father with the Son. Read it in context: chapters 40-48 are sustained polemic against Babylonian idolatry. The point is "no other god beside me." That is exactly what John 1:3 affirms — all things were made through the Son, who is the same God, not a second one. There is no one beside Jehovah because the Son and Spirit are in the one undivided Godhead, not outside it.

### Response 2

**JW says:** "Then which person actually did the creating? Father, Son, or Spirit?"

**Counter:** All three — concurrently and fully, not partly. Imagine a candle lit by two matches at the same instant. Each match by itself would have been enough; neither is half a cause. The candle is fully lit by both. Likewise the Father spoke creation (Gen 1:3), the Son was the agent through whom all things came (John 1:3, Col 1:16, Heb 1:2), and the Spirit hovered (Gen 1:2). Not three creations divided in thirds — one creation, one undivided act, three personal subjects.

### Response 3

**JW says:** "That sounds like having it both ways. Either the Father did it or he didn't."

**Counter:** The category mistake is assuming three persons must mean three acts. Picture three musicians playing the same note in unison — there is one sound, but three players each fully producing that sound. None plays it half. The Trinity creates in unison — one act of creation, three personal subjects fully and concurrently engaged. Theologians call this opera ad extra sunt indivisa — "the external works are undivided". It is not having it both ways; it is recognising that one will exercised by three persons produces one work.

### Response 4

**JW says:** "Where does the Bible say creation is shared among three persons?"

**Counter:** In several places, plainly. Genesis 1:1-2 — God created; the Spirit hovered. John 1:3 — all things were made through the Word. Colossians 1:16 — in him all things were created. Hebrews 1:2 — through whom God made the worlds. Hebrews 1:10 applies Psalm 102:25 ("you laid the foundations of the earth") to the Son. Scripture itself ascribes creation to Father, Son, and Spirit. The Trinity is not a speculation added to those verses — it is what holds them all together without contradiction.

## What to Avoid

Don't reach for the "Elohim is plural therefore Trinity" move — Hebrew Bible scholars rightly call that a weak inference, and the JW will know. Don't argue Isaiah 44:24 by claiming the Hebrew permits a different rendering; it does not. Stay with the contextual point (polemic against idols, not against the Son) and the positive defence (concurrent undivided action).

## Homework

Read John 1:1-3, Colossians 1:15-17, and Hebrews 1:1-3 in sequence. Ask: if these passages teach that the Son is the agent of creation, and Isaiah 44:24 says Jehovah created alone, what one conclusion holds both truths together?
