# "It Is Finished" — The Completed Atonement

*John 19:30 / Hebrews 10:11-14*

## Doorstep Question

> "When Jesus died on the cross, he said 'It is finished.' In your NWT it reads 'It has been accomplished.' The Greek word is tetelestai — a perfect tense verb meaning something completed with permanent results. If the work of atonement is finished, what is left for us to add to it?"

## JW Claim

Jesus's words 'It has been accomplished' refer to his completing the
earthly course Jehovah assigned him — proving Satan a liar, upholding
Jehovah's sovereignty, and providing a ransom that makes salvation
possible. However, individuals must still meet Jehovah's requirements to
benefit from the ransom: acquiring knowledge, obeying God's laws,
associating with God's organisation, and loyally advocating the Kingdom
through the preaching work.

## Strategy

Open the NWT to John 19:30. Even their rendering — 'It has been accomplished' — uses past tense. Then turn to Hebrews 10:11-12 in their NWT. Point out the contrast: 'Every priest takes his station day after day... to make the same sacrifices often, which can never take sins away completely. But this man offered one sacrifice for sins for all time and sat down at the right hand of God.' Old Testament priests never sat down — there were no chairs in the Tabernacle — because their work was never finished. Jesus sat down because his work IS finished. As F.F. Bruce wrote: 'A seated priest is the guarantee of a finished work and an accepted sacrifice.' Then read Hebrews 10:14 in the NWT: 'For it is by one sacrificial offering that he has made those who are being sanctified perfect for all time.' If his one offering has made us perfect for all time, what does adding field service hours and organisational membership accomplish? It cannot improve on 'perfect for all time.' Finally, note that at the moment Jesus died, Matthew 27:51 says the temple curtain was 'torn in two from top to bottom' — God himself ripped open the barrier. Direct access to God is no longer through a priestly class or an organisation. It is through Christ alone. If time allows, close with Galatians 2:21: 'If righteousness is through law, Christ actually died for nothing.' That single verse exposes the stakes — adding conditions to the finished work does not supplement it, it nullifies it.

## Key Insight

Old Testament priests stood because their work was never done. Jesus sat down because his work is finished. Adding human requirements to a finished sacrifice does not supplement it — it denies its sufficiency.

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "'It has been accomplished' means Jesus completed his earthly assignment — not that nothing else is required of us."

**Counter:** But look at what Hebrews says he accomplished. Hebrews 9:12 in your NWT: 'He entered into the holy place, once for all time, and obtained an everlasting deliverance for us.' Not a temporary deliverance, not a conditional deliverance — an everlasting one. And Hebrews 10:14 says his one offering 'has made those who are being sanctified perfect for all time.' If the deliverance is everlasting and the perfecting is for all time, what room is there for your organisation to add conditions? Either 'everlasting' means everlasting, or the NWT is wrong.

### Response 2

**JW says:** "We still need to exercise faith and obey — James says faith without works is dead."

**Counter:** Absolutely — genuine faith produces obedience. But there is a difference between works as the evidence of faith and works as a condition of salvation. Your NWT of Ephesians 2:8-9 says 'you have been saved through faith... not owing to works.' Titus 3:5 says God 'saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy.' And Galatians 2:21 puts it starkly: 'If righteousness is through law, Christ actually died for nothing.' If we could earn it, the cross was pointless. Hebrews 10:18 adds: 'Now where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.' The offering is complete.

### Response 3

**JW says:** "The ransom made salvation possible — but we must meet Jehovah's requirements to benefit from it."

**Counter:** Consider what that really means. You are saying Jesus's sacrifice opened a door, but you must walk through it by meeting organisational requirements. But Colossians 2:13-14 in your NWT says God 'kindly forgave us all our trespasses and erased the handwritten document that consisted of decrees and was in opposition to us.' The debt was not merely made payable — it was erased. Nailed to the torture stake, as your NWT puts it. And Romans 8:1 in the NWT says 'those in union with Christ Jesus have no condemnation.' Not 'those who have met all four organisational requirements have no condemnation.' In union with Christ — that is the condition. Faith, not performance.

### Response 4

**JW says:** "The handwritten document in Colossians 2:14 refers to the Mosaic Law covenant — the decrees and regulations that were abolished when Christ died."

**Counter:** I understand that reading, but look at the flow of your own NWT. Verse 13 says God 'kindly forgave us all our trespasses.' What are trespasses — the Mosaic Law, or your personal sins? They are personal sins. Now verse 14 starts with 'and' — it explains how that forgiveness happened: by erasing the handwritten document that was in opposition to us. The erasing IS the forgiving. If the handwritten document is only the Mosaic Law, then Paul is saying 'God forgave your personal sins by abolishing a legal system.' But abolishing a law does not forgive violations of that law. Eliminating speed limits does not erase existing speeding tickets. What was erased was the record of our guilt — our sin-debt — and the legal demands by which it was measured. Notice the verbs are all completed: forgave, erased, taken out of the way, nailed. God did all four while we 'were dead in trespasses.' A dead person cannot meet requirements.

## What to Avoid

Do not use the 'paid in full receipt' claim without nuance. The popular idea that tetelestai appeared on ancient tax receipts comes from a 1915 study by Moulton and Milligan, but later papyrologists corrected the reading to a different Greek word (tetelonetai). The theological point stands — Colossians 2:14 explicitly uses debt-cancellation language — but honesty about the papyri builds trust. Also, do not mock the sincerity of JWs who work hard in field service. Many are exhausted. The goal is to offer rest, not to belittle their effort.

## Homework

Read Hebrews chapters 9 and 10 in your own NWT. Count how many times it says 'once for all time.' Then ask yourself: if Jesus's sacrifice was once for all time, why does the organisation require ongoing works to benefit from it?
