# The Salvation-Name Dilemma

*Old Testament — only Jehovah's name saves. New Testament — only Jesus' name saves.*

## Doorstep Question

> "In the Old Testament, who is the only one whose name saves and forgives sin? Joel 2:32 says "everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will be saved." Isaiah 43:11 says "I, I am Jehovah, and besides me there is no saviour." Psalm 79:9 asks Jehovah to atone for sins "for your name's sake." Now read Acts 4:12 — "there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." And Luke 24:47, John 14:13, John 16:23-26. Either the apostles preached a rival saving name to Jehovah's — which would be blasphemy — or Jesus is Jehovah."

## JW Claim

In the Old Testament salvation came through calling on Jehovah's name.
Now it comes "through Jesus" or "by means of Jesus" — Jesus is the
channel, but Jehovah is still the source. There's no contradiction
because Jesus is acting as Jehovah's agent.

## Strategy

Build the dilemma in two stacks, then close it. Stack 1 — Old Testament salvation language is exclusively about Jehovah's name: Joel 2:32 ("everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah"), Psalm 25:11 ("for your name's sake, Jehovah, pardon my guilt"), Psalm 54:1 ("save me, O God, by your name"), Psalm 79:9 ("help us... atone for our sins, for your name's sake"), Isaiah 43:11 ("besides me there is no saviour"), Isaiah 43:25 ("I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake"), Isaiah 45:21-22 ("a righteous God and a Saviour; there is none besides me. Turn to me and be saved"). The OT is unambiguous — Jehovah's name saves, Jehovah's name forgives, no other. Stack 2 — New Testament salvation language is exclusively about Jesus' name: Luke 24:47 (forgive- ness "proclaimed in his name"), Acts 4:12 ("no other name under heaven"), John 14:13-14 ("whatever you ask in my name"), John 16:23-26 ("ask the Father in my name... until now you have not asked anything in my name"). Close — Acts 2:21 quotes Joel 2:32 and applies "the name of the Lord" to Jesus. Romans 10:13 does the same. The apostles take the OT formula "calls on the name of Jehovah" and apply it to Jesus. Either they committed blasphemy by elevating a creature's name to Jehovah's saving prerogative, or Jesus is Jehovah. The "agency" deflection cannot work because no creature's name carries the OT promise — Jehovah said "besides me there is no saviour."

## Key Insight

Jehovah said no name except His saves. The apostles said no name except Jesus' saves. The only way both are true is if those two names belong to one God.

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "Jesus is just the channel through which Jehovah's salvation comes — 'by means of' agency"

**Counter:** Channels do not give their own names to the act. The Old Testament formula is "call on the name of Jehovah." That is the *exclusive* saving formula. Isaiah 45:21-22 names the issue directly: a righteous God and a Saviour, there is none besides Him, turn to Him and be saved. When Peter at Pentecost (Acts 2:21) quotes Joel 2:32 and applies "the name of the Lord" to Jesus — telling his hearers to call on the name of Jesus to be saved (Acts 2:38) — he is taking the exclusive saving prerogative of Jehovah and locating it in Jesus. That's not channel language. That's identification language.

### Response 2

**JW says:** "OT verses about Jehovah's name saving were the old covenant; the new covenant uses Jesus' name"

**Counter:** The new covenant doesn't replace Jehovah's name with a different name. Hebrews 1:8 has the Father calling the Son "God." Philippians 2:9-11 gives Jesus "the name above every name" — the name at which every knee bows. That phrase is a direct quotation of Isaiah 45:23, where Jehovah Himself swore that to Him every knee would bow. Paul takes the unique name-glory that Jehovah said He would not share with another (Isaiah 42:8) and gives it to Jesus. The new covenant didn't change the rule that no name but Jehovah's saves. It revealed that Jesus shares Jehovah's name and Jehovah's saving prerogative.

### Response 3

**JW says:** "Romans 10:13 in the NWT says 'name of Jehovah' — not Jesus"

**Counter:** The NWT replaces "Lord" with "Jehovah" there, but read the surrounding verses — Romans 10:9 says you are saved by confessing "Jesus is Lord." Romans 10:11 quotes Isaiah 28:16, and 10:13 quotes Joel 2:32. Paul is building one argument across verses 9-13 — the Lord you confess as Jesus is the same Lord on whose name you call to be saved. The NWT breaks Paul's logic by inserting "Jehovah" in verse 13 while leaving "Lord" in verse 9. In the original Greek, both are *Kyrios* — and Paul is identifying them.

### Response 4

**JW says:** "Yeshua just means 'Jehovah saves' — Jesus is the means, Jehovah is the saver"

**Counter:** Yes — and that's exactly the point. The angel told Joseph to name him Jesus because "he will save his people from their sins" (Matthew 1:21). Mark 2:7 — "who can forgive sins but God alone?" Then Jesus forgives sin in Mark 2:5-10. The name "Jehovah saves" is not borne by an agent of Jehovah; it is borne by the one doing the saving. The name itself confesses what He does — and what He does is what Mark 2:7 says only God can do.

## What to Avoid

Don't stack so many verses that you lose the conversation. Lead with Joel 2:32 → Acts 2:21 and the Isaiah 45:21-22 ("none besides me, turn to me and be saved") couplet. If they push back, then add Psalm 79:9 and Luke 24:47. The argument is the *exclusive* OT-to-NT name transfer — one stack on each side is enough.

## Homework

Read Joel 2:32 alongside Acts 2:21 in your own Bible. Notice how Peter takes Joel's "call on the name of Jehovah" and uses it to call his audience to call on Jesus (Acts 2:38). Then read Isaiah 45:21-22 — "a righteous God and a Saviour; there is none besides me. Turn to me and be saved" — and ask: if Jehovah said there is no saviour besides Him, how can Acts 4:12 say no other name saves except Jesus'?
