# Grace vs Works

*Romans 11:6 in the NWT*

## Doorstep Question

> "Your NWT says if salvation is by 'undeserved kindness,' it's no longer on the basis of works. So which is it — is your salvation a gift or something you earn?"

## JW Claim

Salvation requires knowledge, obedience, organisation membership, and active loyalty.

## Strategy

The NWT's own language makes grace and works mutually exclusive. The Watchtower system requires both.

## Key Insight

Even in the NWT's own rendering, grace and works cannot be mixed. The Watchtower mixes them.

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "We show our faith through works — James says faith without works is dead."

**Counter:** James is talking about the evidence of faith, not the basis of salvation. Ephesians 2:8–10 resolves it: 'saved by grace through faith… not by works… created in Christ Jesus FOR good works.' Works are the fruit of salvation, not the root. James asks 'can SUCH faith save him?' — dead faith that produces nothing was never genuine faith. But the JW system goes further: it requires specific works (field service hours, meeting attendance, organisational loyalty) as prerequisites, not just evidence. That's the Galatians error — adding requirements to grace.

### Response 2

**JW says:** "But we need to obey God's laws to be righteous."

**Counter:** Isaiah 64:6 says 'all our righteous acts are like filthy rags.' Even your NWT renders this honestly. Our best efforts at law-keeping are contaminated. That's why Romans 5:17 calls righteousness a 'gift' — those who 'receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness' will reign in life through Jesus Christ. A gift is received, not earned. And 1 John 3:4 defines sin as 'lawlessness' — if righteousness came through law-keeping, no one would qualify, because all have sinned (Romans 3:23). The solution is not more effort; it's receiving what Christ already accomplished.

### Response 3

**JW says:** "But Paul only excludes self-generated works of the law — Spirit-produced obedience is a different category. Romans 8:4 says the law is fulfilled in those who walk according to the Spirit."

**Counter:** The distinction between self-generated and Spirit-produced obedience is real in Paul's ethics — but Paul never applies it to the basis of justification. Look at the unqualified language. Ephesians 2:9 — 'not by works, so that no one can boast' — no qualifier. Titus 3:5 — 'not because of righteous things we ourselves had done' — no qualifier. Most decisive is Galatians 5:4 — 'you who would be justified by the law have fallen away from grace.' That is a categorical warning against seeking justification through obedience — Spirit-empowered obedience included. Spirit-produced fruit (Romans 8:4, Galatians 5:22-23) is the necessary EVIDENCE of justification; it is not an alternative GROUND of it. The same Holy Spirit who produces the fruit is the one who applies Christ's righteousness to us. He does not bypass the cross by retrofitting our obedience as a second basis.

### Response 4

**JW says:** "But Romans 8:13 says 'if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.' That makes life conditional on putting sin to death."

**Counter:** Romans 8:13 is conditional in form, but read it inside Romans 8 as a whole. Verse 1 — 'no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.' Verse 30 — 'those whom he justified he also glorified' — an unbroken chain with no gap for a works-dependent stage. Verses 38-39 — 'nothing can separate us from the love of God.' The 'if' of verse 13 is not a threat the elect might fail. It is the normal NT pattern of warning the professing community. The Spirit-empowered mortification verse 13 commands is the GUARANTEED FRUIT of the justification of verse 1, not an independent stage that might fail. If you make it independent, you break verse 30. Paul uses the conditional because he is describing how the elect actually live — 'if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you' (8:9) — not opening a question about whether they will. The chain holds. The fruit comes. The assurance stands.

## What to Avoid

Do not belittle their hard work. Honour their sincerity while questioning the theological framework.

## Homework

Read Romans 11:6 with the verse before it, and Ephesians 2:8 through to the end of that paragraph, in the NWT until you can quote both from memory, noticing that even the NWT's 'undeserved kindness' still rules out works. Check the NWT wording of Romans 11:6 yourself before you rely on it. Practise the doorstep question aloud, 'a gift or something you earn?', with warmth, honouring their hard work rather than belittling it. Expect James's 'faith without works is dead'; rehearse the difference between works as the fruit of salvation and works as its root, and have the next sentence in Ephesians ready, where believers are created in Christ Jesus for good works.
