# "System of Things" — NWT's Theologically Motivated Rendering of Aion

*Hebrews 1:2 and the invisible Christological downgrade*

## Doorstep Question

> "I notice JWs use the phrase 'system of things' a lot. I looked for it in my Greek lexicon and couldn't find it — where does that phrase come from? Even the Kingdom Interlinear has 'ages' under the Greek, not 'system of things.' Why the difference?"

## JW Claim

The New World Translation renders the Greek word αἰῶνας (aionas) as
"system of things" throughout the New Testament (over 40 times). The
Watchtower teaches that the current "system of things" will end at
Armageddon and be replaced by a new "system of things" under God's
Kingdom. This rendering supports their eschatological framework.

## Strategy

Show that αἰών (aion) means "age" or "world/universe" in Greek — never "system of things." Open an interlinear (even the Kingdom Interlinear Translation) and show the literal rendering. Then ask: if every other translation says "world" or "ages," why does the NWT use a phrase found nowhere in Greek lexicons? The answer is that "system of things" supports the Watchtower's theological framework — particularly the idea that the current world order will be replaced. This is translation driven by theology rather than scholarship.

## Key Insight

"System of things" appears in no Greek lexicon as a meaning of αἰών. This idiosyncratic rendering is theologically motivated — it supports the Watchtower's eschatological timeline while downgrading Christology. In Hebrews 1:2, "through whom he made the ages" means Jesus created the entire cosmos; "system of things" reduces this to a replaceable social arrangement. The Kingdom Interlinear's own literal rendering ("ages") contradicts the NWT main text — and it's available in the JW Library app for anyone to check.

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "Our translation committee studied the original languages carefully."

**Counter:** Then let's check their work. Open the Kingdom Interlinear Translation — published by the Watchtower — and look at the word-for-word rendering under Hebrews 1:2. It says "ages" (αἰῶνας), not "system of things." Your own interlinear disagrees with the NWT's main text. Why?

### Response 2

**JW says:** "It captures the meaning better for modern readers."

**Counter:** But it changes the meaning in a theologically significant way. "Ages" means the span of time and the created universe — "through whom he made the ages" means Jesus is the Creator of the cosmos itself. "System of things" narrows this down to a social arrangement that can be replaced. One makes Jesus the Creator of the universe; the other makes him the architect of a temporary social order. That's a Christological downgrade, not a translation choice.

### Response 3

**JW says:** "Different translations use different words."

**Counter:** True, but every major translation — KJV, ESV, NASB, NIV, even Catholic and Orthodox versions — agrees on "world" or "ages." Only the NWT uses "system of things." When one translation disagrees with every other, the question is whether the one or the many got it right. In this case, every Greek lexicon (BDAG, Thayer, Liddell-Scott) agrees with the many.

## What to Avoid

Don't mock the phrase — it sounds normal to JWs and they use it constantly. Instead, gently show the Greek evidence and let the discrepancy speak for itself.

## Homework

Read Hebrews 1:2 with the verses around it, and Hebrews 11:3, in a standard translation, then the same verses, with Matthew 24:3 and 2 Corinthians 4:4, in the NWT on jw.org, so you know where "system of things" turns up. The whole argument rests on one check, so do it with your own eyes: open the Kingdom Interlinear in the JW Library app and find the word-for-word line under Hebrews 1:2. If you can, look up aion in BDAG or Thayer as well. Practise the doorstep question as honest curiosity, never mockery, since the phrase is everyday speech for Witnesses. Rehearse the "it captures the meaning better" reply: Creator of the cosmos versus architect of a temporary social order.
