# Watchtower's Changed Teachings

*'New Light' contradictions + AD 70 vindication*

## Doorstep Question

> "Your own founder said 'new light never extinguishes older light but adds to it.' How do you explain the teaching that Jesus returned in 1874, which was later changed to 1914? Would Jehovah teach something false first?"

## JW Claim

'The light gets brighter' — Jehovah reveals truth progressively.

## Strategy

By Russell's own standard, contradictory changes cannot be from Jehovah. Contrast with Jesus: he staked his credibility on the temple's destruction within one generation, and it happened exactly as promised in AD 70.

## Key Insight

The Watchtower's own definition of 'new light' disqualifies its own history of doctrinal reversals.

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "Those weren't prophecies; they were expectations."

**Counter:** Your organisation made specific predictions in the name of God. Members sold property and quit jobs because of them. Those are consequences of prophetic claims, not casual expectations.

### Response 2

**JW says:** "We need the organisation to understand the Bible correctly."

**Counter:** The Watchtower itself admitted this in August 15, 1981: people who read the Bible on their own, without Watchtower publications, 'reverted right back to the apostate doctrines that commentaries by Christendom's clergy were teaching 100 years ago' — doctrines including the Trinity, the deity of Christ, and the bodily resurrection. Think about what that means: the Bible alone, without Watchtower interpretation, leads people to believe in the Trinity. Shouldn't that tell you something about what the Bible actually teaches?

### Response 3

**JW says:** "The dates were just imperfect human understanding."

**Counter:** Consider the pattern: 1874 (Christ's return — later changed to 1914), 1925 (patriarchs would be resurrected — Rutherford admitted error), 1975 (6,000 years of human history ending, strong Armageddon expectation — members sold homes). Each time the organisation blamed individual members for 'running ahead,' yet the publications themselves created the expectations. Deuteronomy 18:22 says when a prophet speaks in God's name and it does not come true, that is a message Jehovah has not spoken.

### Response 4

**JW says:** "Jehovah progressively reveals truth — the old understanding was just incomplete."

**Counter:** Ask yourself: who gave the old understanding? There are only two options. If Jehovah gave it, then he gave his people false information — and Titus 1:2 says God 'cannot lie.' If the Governing Body came up with it on their own, then they are not God's channel of communication — they are men guessing and getting it wrong. Either way, the system breaks down. Incomplete light gets brighter; wrong light gets replaced. Changing 1874 to 1914 is not light getting brighter — it is a different light entirely.

### Response 5

**JW says:** "Our understanding improves as the light gets brighter — this is what Proverbs 4:18 promises."

**Counter:** Lloyd Barry of the Governing Body described past teachings as "the present truth for that period." Raymond Franz's response is devastating: if what was "truth" yesterday is error today, the word "truth" has no meaning. Genuine progressive revelation adds detail — it does not reverse previous claims. A light that gets brighter does not turn off and on. The Watchtower has not merely refined understanding; it has reversed positions (organ transplants: forbidden, then allowed; alternative service: forbidden, then allowed; the generation of 1914: literal, then overlapping). Reversals are not brighter light.

## What to Avoid

Use only one example at the door (1874 → 1914 is the strongest). Save the full catalogue for follow-up conversations. Do not overwhelm.

## Homework

Learn the 1874 to 1914 change well enough to describe it in two sentences, and memorise Russell's line that new light never extinguishes older light but adds to it, because that standard carries the argument. Read Deuteronomy 18:22 and Titus 1:2 in the NWT so you can turn to them without searching. Practise the doorstep question aloud using that one example only; save the wider history for a later conversation. Expect 'those were expectations, not prophecies', or an appeal to Proverbs 4:18. Rehearse the simple distinction that brighter light adds detail while a reversal replaces it, then point to Jesus' prophecy of the temple's destruction, fulfilled in AD 70 just as he said.
