# The Full JW Nazi Record — Resistance and the 1933 Declaration

*By their fruit you will recognise them — the whole harvest, not the best handful (Matt 7:16)*

## Doorstep Question

> "You rightly honour the Witnesses who went to the camps under Hitler — about ten thousand imprisoned, hundreds executed. That courage is real and the Holocaust Museum documents it. But can I ask you something most Witnesses never hear? On June 25, 1933, at a Watch Tower convention in Berlin, Joseph Rutherford delivered a "Declaration of Facts" addressed to Hitler's government, seeking accommodation with the Nazi state. Historians have the text. If we give the organisation credit for the prisoners' courage, does it also have to bear responsibility for the letter its president signed?"

## JW Claim

Jehovah's Witnesses were the only Christian group that truly resisted
Hitler. Around ten thousand of us were imprisoned in concentration camps,
we wore the purple triangle, we refused the "Heil Hitler" salute, we
refused Wehrmacht induction, and hundreds were executed. No other church
has a record like ours. The mainstream churches collaborated — ours
resisted. That is the fruit of true worship, and it proves Jehovah's
organisation was on the right side of history.

## Strategy

This argument is a pickaxe, not a rake. Do not attack the JW resistance record — it is real, documented by the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, and deserves honour. Start by honouring it loudly and specifically. Then introduce the 1933 Declaration of Facts as something most Witnesses have never been told about, and invite them to test Pro's own logic: if the organisation gets credit for the fruit, it must also own the roots. Reference Detlef Garbe's scholarly treatment as common ground — he is sympathetic to the Witnesses and still documents the Declaration. The emotional pivot is: "Your great-grandparents who died in Dachau are not the ones I am questioning. I am questioning the men in the office who signed a letter they never saw." Leave them with the Garbe citation and ask them to look it up themselves.

## Key Insight

Honest history tells both stories. The individual Witnesses who went to the camps were heroes. The 1933 Declaration of Facts is also real. A mature faith can hold both together; an organisation that only tells you one half is curating your conscience.

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "The Declaration of Facts was a protest letter against persecution, not an accommodation. You are slandering Brother Rutherford."

**Counter:** I understand why it feels that way — that is how it is often framed in Watchtower publications. But the primary text is available, and Detlef Garbe, who is actually sympathetic to the Witnesses, prints and analyses it in Between Resistance and Martyrdom. The Declaration explicitly tells the Hitler government that the Watchtower shares "the highest ideals" of the German people and blames opposition on "Big Business" and "Jewish financial power." Those are the actual words. A protest letter does not frame Jewish people that way. I am not asking you to trust me — I am asking you to read the document for yourself. Would you be willing to?

### Response 2

**JW says:** "Even if the Declaration was flawed, Jehovah corrected it through new light and the persecution that followed."

**Counter:** That is an honest move and I respect it. But notice what you have just said — the organisation got it wrong in 1933 and needed correction. That is exactly what mainstream Protestants say about the Deutsche Christen movement and exactly what the Stuttgart Declaration of Guilt confessed in 1945. The question is not whether an organisation can be wrong. The question is whether an organisation that has been wrong can still claim to be God's exclusive channel of communication. The Confessing Church apologised publicly in 1945. Has the Watchtower ever publicly acknowledged the 1933 Declaration?

### Response 3

**JW says:** "The Confessing Church was a tiny minority — most Protestants collaborated."

**Counter:** This is where the honest history matters. Matthew Hockenos, who wrote A Church Divided from Cornell University Press, documents that roughly one-third of German Protestant clergy aligned with the Confessing Church. The Barmen Declaration in May 1934 had 138 congregations behind it. Bonhoeffer was executed at Flossenbürg in April 1945. Niemöller was imprisoned in Dachau. You are right that the Deutsche Christen collaborated — I am not defending them. I am saying German Protestantism was genuinely divided. Your side was also divided: individuals resisted, the organisation's 1933 letter accommodated. Honest history tells both halves on both sides.

### Response 4

**JW says:** "Our brothers died for their faith. You are dishonouring their memory."

**Counter:** I am not dishonouring them — I am honouring them more carefully than the Watchtower does. The Watchtower uses their blood to validate the organisation that signed the 1933 Declaration. I am saying their courage belonged to them and to Jehovah, not to the men in Brooklyn who never set foot in a camp. A Mennonite who dies for Christ does not vindicate every decision the Mennonite leadership ever made. A Confessing Church martyr does not vindicate Luther's antisemitic tracts. Honouring the martyrs means letting their witness stand on its own — not letting it be conscripted to launder organisational history.

### Response 5

**JW says:** "The Watchtower has never claimed to be perfect — only the Bible is perfect."

**Counter:** I agree with that sentence completely. But then the fruit argument has to be withdrawn. You cannot say "look at our record — no wars, no divorce, no clergy-laity divide — this proves we are God's organisation" and also say "we have never claimed to be perfect, only the Bible is." Pick one. If the Bible is the standard, then let's open the Bible together and see whether the Watchtower's distinctives match. If the fruit is the standard, then the whole harvest has to be on the table — including June 25, 1933.

### Response 6

**JW says:** "You are just repeating apostate propaganda. Garbe is biased."

**Counter:** Garbe is a German historian published by the University of Wisconsin Press — one of the most respected academic presses in the English- speaking world. His book is actually considered one of the most sympathetic scholarly treatments of JWs in the Third Reich. If Garbe is apostate propaganda, then every serious academic account of the period is apostate propaganda — which means no history outside the Watchtower can be trusted. Does that feel right to you? Could you ask an elder whether Garbe's book is something a Witness would be allowed to read, and see what happens?

### Response 7

**JW says:** "What does any of this have to do with the truth of the Bible?"

**Counter:** Everything, because your organisation uses the camp record as proof that it is God's channel. If the organisation's record is being used as evidence, then the whole record is relevant evidence — including 1933. I am not saying the Bible is false. I am saying the fruit argument for the Watchtower depends on telling only the best half of the story. Let's put the organisation to one side and open Matthew 5 and 7 together and let Jesus speak. That is where I actually want to go with you.

### Response 8

**JW says:** "The Berlin branch manager Paul Balzereit tempered or rewrote the 1933 Declaration without Rutherford's full knowledge. The Watchtower's official position was never to align with the Nazi regime."

**Counter:** The Balzereit defence is a real one, and it deserves engagement rather than dismissal. Some accommodationist language was indeed added by the Berlin branch in the German translation of certain contemporary publications. But the *Declaration of Facts* itself was not translated by Balzereit — it was an organisational document delivered at the Watch Tower Society's Berlin convention on 25 June 1933, with Rutherford present, and subsequently circulated to government officials. The antisemitic framing about "Big Business and Jewish financial power" is in the document itself, not added later by a branch manager. And here is the decisive point: the Watchtower's own *Awake!* magazine of 8 July 1998 acknowledged the Declaration's existence and attempted to explain its language — without ever attributing it to Balzereit. If your own organisation has admitted authorship and tried to defend the wording, the Balzereit attribution is not the official Watchtower position; it is a folk-history defence circulated among members.

### Response 9

**JW says:** "Even if there were imperfect organisational decisions, the individual Witnesses paid in blood. Hundreds were executed. That sacrifice is the real fruit."

**Counter:** I want to honour those individual Witnesses without qualification — their courage was real and their suffering was real and their refusal to take the loyalty oath cost them everything. That is not in dispute, and any honest conversation must lead with that. But here is the question Pro's case actually raised in the debate: *the organisational record*. Pro's argument was that the Watchtower as an institution earned credit for "no internal faction seeking accommodation." If the institution earns credit for the resistance, the same logic applies to the 1933 Declaration — the institution must also bear the responsibility for what it asked Hitler to consider. You cannot have organisational credit for the martyrs and individual-only blame for the Declaration. The honest position is to honour the Witness individuals AND to acknowledge what the organisation did in their name in 1933. Both, not one.

## What to Avoid

Do not sneer at the camp record. Do not say "your resistance is a myth" or "the ten thousand figure is inflated" — it is not, and you will burn the relationship. Do not bring this up before you have honoured the martyrs out loud. Do not leverage the Holocaust for debate points. Do not cite the Declaration's antisemitic phrasing without also being ready to name Luther's antisemitic tracts if asked — honesty cuts both ways. Do not expect them to accept the Declaration in one conversation; plant the Garbe citation and trust Jehovah with the harvest.

## Homework

Read Detlef Garbe's Between Resistance and Martyrdom, at least the part that prints and analyses the 25 June 1933 Declaration of Facts, so that when you invite the Witness to read it you have already done so. Read the US Holocaust Memorial Museum's material on Jehovah's Witnesses, so you can honour the camp record specifically and sincerely. Then find the 8 July 1998 Awake! this argument cites and read how it explains the Declaration in its own words. Practise saying the honouring part aloud before you ever ask the question. Rehearse the "slandering Brother Rutherford" reply: the text is available, so read it together. Be ready to acknowledge Luther's antisemitic tracts honestly if they come up.
