# Monogenes — 'Only Begotten' Means Unique

*John 3:16*

## Doorstep Question

> "In John 3:16, your Bible says God gave his 'only-begotten Son.' Do you know what the Greek word monogenes actually means? It doesn't mean 'born' or 'created' — it means 'unique, one of a kind.' If Jesus is unique and one of a kind, how can he be just another created angel?"

## JW Claim

John 3:16 says God gave his "only-begotten Son." The word "begotten"
means Jesus was produced or brought forth by Jehovah — he had a beginning.
Just as a human father begets a son, Jehovah begot Jesus as his first
creation.

## Strategy

This is a gentle, curiosity-driven argument. Most JWs have never looked at the Greek behind "only begotten." The word monogenes comes from monos (only) + genos (kind/class), NOT from gennao (to beget/bear). It means "unique, one of a kind" — the same word is used of Isaac in Hebrews 11:17, even though Abraham had other sons (Ishmael). Isaac wasn't Abraham's "only begotten" in a literal sense — he was the unique, promised son. Likewise, Jesus is the unique Son of God, not a created being. Modern translations (ESV, NIV, CSB) now render it "one and only Son" rather than "only begotten." Even the NWT's own Kingdom Interlinear shows the word is monogenes, not something from gennao. The NWT 2013 itself renders John 3:16 as "his only-begotten Son" — but their own interlinear exposes the underlying Greek.

## Key Insight

"Only begotten" is a misleading English translation. The Greek word means "unique, one of a kind." Jesus is not the first thing God made — he is the one-of-a-kind Son who shares God's very nature.

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "But the word still has 'genes' in it — that implies being generated or born."

**Counter:** The -genes part comes from genos (kind/class), not gennao (to beget). Think of it this way: Hebrews 11:17 calls Isaac Abraham's monogenes, but Abraham also had Ishmael. Isaac wasn't literally his only begotten son — he was his unique, one-of-a-kind son. Same word, same meaning when applied to Jesus.

### Response 2

**JW says:** "But Jesus was created — Colossians 1:15 calls him the firstborn."

**Counter:** That's a great passage to look at together. 'Firstborn' (prototokos) is a title of rank and pre-eminence, not birth order. Colossians 1:16 goes on to say 'by him ALL things were created' — if he created everything, he can't be part of the creation himself.

### Response 3

**JW says:** "Proverbs 8:22 says Jehovah produced wisdom as the beginning of his way."

**Counter:** Proverbs 8 is a poetic personification of wisdom — it also says wisdom was 'brought forth' and was 'playing' before God. No one thinks wisdom is literally a person playing. The New Testament identifies Jesus as God's wisdom (1 Corinthians 1:24), but the Proverbs passage is Hebrew poetry, not a biography of a pre-human Jesus.

### Response 4

**JW says:** "Yes, monogenes means unique — and Jesus is unique because he is the only one Jehovah created directly, while everything else was created through him."

**Counter:** That reframing rescues your theology by inserting a category the Bible never uses. The New Testament never calls Jesus "the unique one Jehovah created directly" — it calls him monogenes theos, "unique God" (John 1:18), and says of him that "all things were made through him, and apart from him not even one thing was made that has been made" (John 1:3). Apart from him means *outside of* his creative activity nothing came into being. If Jesus were the one direct creature, the verse would have to read "all *other* things were made through him" — which is exactly the wording the NWT inserts into Colossians 1:16. Strip the insertion and the pattern is consistent: Jesus is the Creator, not the first creature. His uniqueness is the uniqueness of *being* the only Son of the same divine nature as the Father — not the uniqueness of being the first creation in a class of creations.

### Response 5

**JW says:** "John 1:18 just calls Jesus 'the only-begotten god' — a lesser god, not Almighty God."

**Counter:** Your own NWT is actually helping here. The earliest and best manuscripts — Papyrus 66, Papyrus 75, Codex Sinaiticus, Codex Vaticanus — read monogenes theos ('unique God'), not monogenes huios ('unique Son'). Your NWT acknowledges this by rendering it 'the only-begotten god' rather than 'Son.' But making 'god' lowercase does not change the Greek. The word is theos — the same word used for the Father throughout John's Gospel. If Jesus is 'a god' who is separate from the true God, you have two gods — and Isaiah 43:10 in your own NWT says 'before me no god was formed, and after me there has been none.' There is no category for a second, lesser god in the Bible. Jesus is either the true God or a false one. John 1:18 says he is monogenes theos — the unique God — not a junior edition.

## What to Avoid

Don't get bogged down in a technical Greek lesson. The Isaac example from Hebrews 11:17 is the cleanest proof — the JW can verify it in their own Bible. Keep it conversational: "Did you know the same Greek word is used of Isaac, who definitely wasn't Abraham's only son?"

## Homework

Look up Hebrews 11:17 in your own Bible. It calls Isaac Abraham's monogenes — but Abraham also had Ishmael. Ask yourself: does "only begotten" mean "only child born" or "unique, one of a kind"?
