# James Defines Pure Religion — and It Isn't Preaching

*James 1:27 / Matthew 5:46-47 / Galatians 6:10*

## Doorstep Question

> "Your organisation often quotes John 13:35 — 'by this all will know you are my disciples, if you have love among yourselves.' But in Matthew 5:46-47, Jesus says 'if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?' If loving only your own group is what even pagans do, how does internal love prove you are the true religion?"

## JW Claim

Jehovah's Witnesses are identified as the true religion by their love for
one another (John 13:35). Their preaching work is the greatest charity —
offering people everlasting life. Disaster relief within the organisation
demonstrates their love. Charitable works in the broader community are
unnecessary because this system of things will be replaced by God's Kingdom.

## Strategy

Start by affirming John 13:35 — loving one another genuinely matters. Then introduce the 'tax collector test' from Matthew 5:46-47: Jesus explicitly says that loving only those who love you back is what even tax collectors and pagans do. It proves nothing about discipleship. Next, read James 1:27 from their own NWT — pure worship is defined as looking after orphans and widows, not preaching. James never mentions preaching at all. Then ask the empirical question: can you name a single JW hospital, soup kitchen, homeless shelter, or adoption agency that serves the general public? Compare with Catholic Charities, the Salvation Army, Lutheran World Relief, or Baptist hospitals. Finally, read Galatians 6:10 from the NWT — it says 'toward all' first, then 'especially toward those related to us in the faith.' Priority is not exclusivity.

## Key Insight

James 1:27 defines pure religion as caring for orphans and widows — not preaching. Jesus says in Matthew 5:46-47 that loving only your own group is what even tax collectors do. The JW organisation runs zero public charities and actively discourages charitable giving in its publications. Their own NWT supports this critique.

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "Our preaching work is the greatest charity — we give people everlasting life."

**Counter:** Jesus fed the 5,000 before he preached to them. He healed bodies and souls. James 2:15-16 says if a brother is naked and hungry, and you say 'go in peace, keep warm and well fed' but do nothing for their physical needs — what good is that? James defines pure religion as caring for orphans and widows, not preaching. Even your NWT says 'look after orphans and widows in their tribulation.'

### Response 2

**JW says:** "We do disaster relief for our brothers and sisters."

**Counter:** Disaster relief primarily for your own members is exactly what Jesus described in Matthew 5:47 — 'if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others?' Can you name a single JW hospital, food bank, or homeless shelter that serves the general public? Compare that with Catholic Charities, the Salvation Army, or any number of Christian organisations that serve everyone regardless of faith.

### Response 3

**JW says:** "Galatians 6:10 says 'especially toward those related to us in the faith.'"

**Counter:** Read the whole verse — even in the NWT it says 'toward all' first. 'Especially' means priority, not exclusivity. The verse commands good works toward everyone as the baseline, with extra care for fellow believers. The Watchtower flips this — making the exception the rule and ignoring the 'toward all' entirely.

### Response 4

**JW says:** "This wicked system will be destroyed — only God's Kingdom is the real solution."

**Counter:** Jesus didn't refuse to feed or heal people because the Kingdom was coming. He met physical needs in the present while preaching the Kingdom. The Good Samaritan parable (Luke 10:25-37) defines 'neighbour' as anyone in need — including a religious outsider helping someone from a different group. The priest and Levite who passed by were the religious insiders.

### Response 5

**JW says:** "Charitable organisations are corrupt and wasteful."

**Counter:** The corruption of some charities doesn't excuse doing nothing. Many Christian charities have excellent accountability records. And nothing stops the Watchtower from building its own hospitals, food banks, or shelters with proper oversight. The real question is: why does the organisation actively discourage the very thing James 1:27 defines as pure religion?

## What to Avoid

Don't make this about shaming individual JWs — many are personally generous. Focus on the organisational teaching that discourages charity and the contrast with what James and Jesus actually taught. Don't get sidetracked into debating whether 'the least of these' in Matthew 25 refers to the anointed — that's a secondary issue that pulls focus from the stronger James 1:27 and Matthew 5:46-47 texts.

## Homework

Read James 1:19-27 and 2:14-17 together so you can show that James defines pure worship by care for orphans and widows and never mentions preaching. Read Matthew 5:43-48 for the 'tax collector test', and Galatians 6:9-10 in the NWT, noting that 'toward all' comes before 'especially'. Practise the doorstep question aloud, opening by affirming John 13:35 sincerely. The likeliest reply is that preaching is the greatest charity, so rehearse James 2:15-16 and Jesus feeding the 5,000 before he preached to them. Read Luke 10:25-37 as well, in case the conversation turns to this system being destroyed.
