# Isaiah's Healing Prophecy — Fulfilled in Christ's Ministry

*Isaiah 35:5-6 / Matthew 11:4-5*

## Doorstep Question

> "When John the Baptist sent his disciples to ask Jesus, "Are you the one who is to come?" — how did Jesus answer? He said, "Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight and the lame walk" (Matthew 11:4-5). Do you recognise what Jesus was quoting? He was quoting Isaiah 35:5-6 — the very passage Jehovah's Witnesses apply to a future paradise. Jesus said it was happening right then. Why do we push it back into the future when Jesus said it was present?"

## JW Claim

Isaiah 35:5-6 describes conditions in the earthly paradise that will exist after
Armageddon, when Jehovah restores perfect health to obedient mankind. "At that
time the eyes of the blind will be opened, and the ears of the deaf will be
unstopped." These blessings are future — they will be realised under Kingdom rule
during the thousand-year reign of Christ.

## Strategy

This argument is devastating because it lets Jesus Himself interpret the Old Testament passage. You are not imposing your theology on Isaiah — you are showing that Jesus already told us what Isaiah 35 means.
1. Open to Matthew 11:2-6 (or Luke 7:18-23) together. Read the whole scene: John is in prison, wondering if Jesus is really the Messiah. Jesus answers by pointing to His own miracles and quoting Isaiah 35.
2. Now turn to Isaiah 35:5-6 and read it. Ask: "Do you see the same words? The blind see, the deaf hear, the lame leap?" The JW will agree — the wording is unmistakable.
3. Then ask the key question: "Was Jesus telling John to wait for a future paradise — or was He saying the prophecy was being fulfilled right then in His ministry?" The answer is obvious from the text: Jesus said, "Go and TELL John what you hear and SEE." Present tense. Happening now.
4. This does not mean there is no future hope. Christ's healing miracles were "firstfruits" — a downpayment guaranteeing the final harvest (Romans 8:23; 2 Corinthians 1:22). But it does mean that Isaiah 35 is not exclusively future. Jesus began fulfilling it two thousand years ago.

## Key Insight

Jesus Himself applied Isaiah 35:5-6 to His present ministry (Matthew 11:4-5). If Jesus said the prophecy was being fulfilled in His day, deferring it entirely to a future paradise contradicts His own words.

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "Jesus' miracles were a small-scale preview. The full fulfilment is in the paradise."

**Counter:** Jesus did not say "this is a preview of what Isaiah spoke" — He said "go and tell John what you hear and see." He presented His miracles as evidence that He was the Coming One, not as a trailer for a future film. And note: Jesus healed people who then grew old and died. If Isaiah 35 is only about permanent paradise healing, Jesus' miracles fail to qualify. But if Isaiah 35 is about the Messianic age breaking into history — which is what Jesus claimed — then His ministry is the fulfilment, not just a preview.

### Response 2

**JW says:** "But people are still sick and blind today. The prophecy can't be fully fulfilled yet."

**Counter:** Agreed — there is an "already and not yet" dimension. Christ inaugurated the Kingdom; He will consummate it at His return. But the critical point is that Isaiah 35 began its fulfilment in Christ's ministry — Jesus said so. The Watchtower pushes it entirely into the future, which contradicts Matthew 11:4-5. The question is not whether more is coming — it is whether anything has already started. Jesus said yes.

## What to Avoid

Do not argue that all sickness ended with Jesus' ministry — that is easily refuted. The point is inaugurated fulfilment, not complete fulfilment. Stay focused on what Jesus said about Isaiah 35, not on current world conditions.

## Homework

Read Isaiah 35 in full, then Matthew 11:2-6 and Luke 7:18-23, until you can lay the passages side by side from memory and name the shared signs: the blind see, the deaf hear, the lame leap. In your NWT, check whether Matthew 11:4-5 carries a cross-reference to Isaiah 35:5-6, and see how jw.org applies Isaiah 35 to the future paradise. Read Romans 8:23 and 2 Corinthians 1:22 so you can explain the firstfruits idea without denying the future hope. Practise the doorstep question aloud — "Do you recognise what Jesus was quoting?" — and give the Witness time to see it. Prepare for "Jesus' miracles were only a small-scale preview": rehearse that Jesus told John's disciples to report what they "hear and see", present tense.
