Or is he saying all four groups have equal standing before God in Christ — which is the actual context of the whole chapter?" ## JW Claim JWs sometimes reach for Galatians 3:28 to neutralise the problem of Revelation 14:4 — which describes the 144,000 as "male virgins who have not defiled themselves with women." The move is: "Well, Galatians says there's no male or female in Christ, so the 'male' in Revelation 14 doesn't really mean literal men." The same verse is also misused by egalitarians to argue for women in pastoral office, and by some to argue for a genderless heavenly state. ## Strategy Read Galatians 3:26–29 in context. The whole paragraph is about who inherits the Abrahamic promise. Verse 26: "you are all sons of God, through faith." Verse 27: "as many as were baptised into Christ." Verse 28: "there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." Verse 29: "and if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise." The subject of every verse is *access to the Abrahamic inheritance*. Paul is answering the question: does the promise given to Abraham belong only to ethnic Jews, only to free men, only to males? No — in Christ, the access is equal. He is not saying Gentiles stop being Gentiles, or slaves stop being slaves, or women stop being women. He is saying all four groups are equally in Christ and equally heirs. Then apply this back to Revelation 14:4. If Galatians 3:28 dissolved gender as a real category, it would also dissolve ethnicity (so "Jewish" in Rev 7:4 is empty), class, and freedom. But Paul is plainly not saying that — women in the Galatian churches did not cease being women, and Gentiles did not cease being Gentiles. So Galatians 3:28 cannot be made to erase the "male" qualifier in Revelation 14:4 without also erasing every other descriptor — which would annihilate the JW reading of that passage entirely, including the number 144,000. ## Key Insight Galatians 3:28 is horizontal (who gets access), not vertical (what you become). Paul preserves, not erases, real human categories — he refuses to let any of them become barriers to the gospel. Using this verse to make heaven genderless misreads the whole chapter, and using it to cancel the "male" in Revelation 14:4 would cancel every other word in the same description. ## JW Responses & Counters ### Response 1 **JW says:** "But in the resurrection Jesus said they neither marry nor are given in marriage (Matthew 22:30) — so gender IS abolished." **Counter:** Jesus says there is no marriage in the resurrection — he does not say there is no gender. The relational institution of marriage passes away; the creational category of male and female does not. Jesus himself is raised still identifiably as a man (Acts 1:11, 17:31). Mary recognises the risen Christ as "Rabboni" (John 20:16), not as a de-gendered entity. The resurrection transforms our bodies (1 Cor 15) but does not erase what they fundamentally are. ### Response 2 **JW says:** "Paul is saying we're all equal, so male and female in Revelation 14 doesn't matter." **Counter:** "Equal before God" and "identical in every respect" are different claims. Paul treats Jew/Greek, slave/free, male/female as equal before God throughout Galatians 3 — but he also explicitly addresses each category differently in Ephesians 5 (husbands/wives), Ephesians 6 (slaves/masters), Romans 9–11 (Jews/Gentiles). Equal standing before God does not equal dissolution of categories. If Galatians 3:28 dissolved categories, Paul contradicted himself in every other letter. ### Response 3 **JW says:** "But Galatians is Paul's letter to the Gentiles — it's about heavenly reality, not earthly life." **Counter:** Read Galatians 3:29 — "if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise." That's not a statement about post-death heavenly form; it's a statement about present inheritance rights. Paul is addressing a specific first-century problem: Judaisers requiring Gentile converts to become Jews (and men, and observers of Mosaic class distinctions) before they could be counted as heirs of the Abrahamic promise. Paul says no — the promise is for all who are in Christ, equally. ## What to Avoid Don't fight the women-in-ministry implication of Galatians 3:28 at the door — it's a distraction from the JW's actual error. Keep the focus on the original context (Jew/Gentile inheritance) and how the verse cannot logically cancel the "male" in Revelation 14:4 without cancelling every other detail of that passage. ## Homework Read Galatians 3 in full at home. Notice how every verse of chapter 3 builds toward verse 29 — the inheritance of Abraham for all who are in Christ.
