# The 2012 Faithful Slave Reversal — Apostasy Became Doctrine

*Matthew 24:45 / 1 Peter 4:10 / Watchtower 1981 vs. 2013*

## Doorstep Question

> "Your organisation teaches that the Governing Body is the faithful and discreet slave of Matthew 24:45. Did you know that in 1981, the Watchtower specifically called that exact belief — that only the leading ones are the slave — an apostate teaching without scriptural support?"

## JW Claim

The "faithful and discreet slave" of Matthew 24:45 is exclusively the
Governing Body — currently eight men at world headquarters in Warwick, New
York — but only when acting collectively in their role of providing spiritual
instruction. The "domestics" are all Jehovah's Witnesses. The slave was
appointed in 1919 when Jesus found the Bible Students faithfully dispensing
spiritual food. (Watchtower, Jul 15, 2013, p. 22)

## Strategy

The core exhibit is the Watchtower's own publications contradicting each other. In 1981, the Watchtower explicitly condemned the idea that "only the leading ones" constitute the faithful slave, calling it an apostate teaching without scriptural support (Watchtower, Mar 1, 1981, pp. 24-26). In October 2012, the Governing Body adopted precisely this position as revealed truth, and formally published it in the July 15, 2013 Watchtower. Start by establishing the current teaching, then read the 1981 quote. Ask: "How can the same belief be apostasy in 1981 and truth in 2012?" Supplement with the exegetical point that Matthew 24:45-51 sits within a series of four parables about readiness (faithful servant, ten virgins, talents, sheep and goats) — Jesus is teaching a lesson about individual faithfulness, not establishing an institutional office. Point to 1 Peter 4:10: "Each of you should use whatever gift he has received to serve one another" — the New Testament model is mutual stewardship among all believers, not a mediated channel through a committee.

## Key Insight

The 2012 faithful slave redefinition is not merely a doctrinal update — it is a reversal on the Governing Body's own identity. What the Watchtower called apostasy in 1981 became official doctrine in 2012. This creates an inescapable dilemma: either the 1981 Watchtower was wrong (so how much else was wrong?), or the 2012 Watchtower is wrong (so why trust them now?). Either way, the organisation's claim to be a reliable truth channel is undermined by its own publications.

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "The light gets brighter — Jehovah reveals truth progressively (Proverbs 4:18)."

**Counter:** Your own 1981 Watchtower did not call this "dim light." It specifically labelled the belief that only the leading ones are the slave as apostasy — a teaching without scriptural support. Proverbs 4:18 describes the path of the righteous individual getting brighter over time. It does not describe an organisation condemning a belief as apostasy and then adopting it as truth thirty years later. Even Charles Russell taught that new light adds to old light and never contradicts it.

### Response 2

**JW says:** "Jehovah has always used an organisation — this is how he works."

**Counter:** The question is not whether God uses organisation. The question is: why did Jesus' supposed "channel of truth" teach something as apostate for decades, then adopt that exact teaching as truth? If they were wrong about their own identity for over 130 years — from 1881 to 2012 — on what basis should you trust their current self-identification? Every biblical authority was confirmed by external evidence: miracles, fulfilled prophecy, God's audible voice. What external evidence confirmed the 2012 change?

### Response 3

**JW says:** "The Governing Body humbly corrected their understanding."

**Counter:** Consider the stakes. This is not a minor doctrinal correction — it is the entire basis of the Governing Body's authority claim. They are saying: "We were wrong about who we are for 130 years, but now trust us — we have figured it out." If a doctor told you they had been misdiagnosing you for 130 years but just got it right, would that increase or decrease your trust?

### Response 4

**JW says:** "Jesus appointed the faithful slave in 1919 — the Governing Body are doing the work."

**Counter:** Notice the circular reasoning: "How do we know they are the slave? Because Jesus appointed them. How do we know Jesus appointed them? Because they say they are doing the work. How do we verify the work proves appointment? Because they say it does." No external verification exists. And in the parable itself, the master appoints the slave before departing and judges him upon return — not five years after arriving. The 1919 timeline inverts the parable's own logic.

### Response 5

**JW says:** "The old understanding was still from Jehovah — he was guiding them step by step."

**Counter:** In 1981, the Watchtower did not say "we have an incomplete understanding." It said the alternative view was apostasy — a teaching that contradicts God's truth. Jehovah does not guide his people by having them condemn truth as apostasy and then adopt it as doctrine. That is not progressive revelation — it is a complete reversal. The timeline of changes speaks for itself: Russell was the slave, then he was not; all anointed were the slave, then they were not; only the leaders being the slave was apostasy, then it was truth.

## What to Avoid

Do not rehash the general Governing Body authority critique already covered in argument #027, or the 1919 unfalsifiability argument in #056. Keep the focus tightly on the 1981-vs-2012 self-contradiction. Also avoid attacking the JW personally — they likely lived through this change and accepted it in good faith.

## Homework

Before raising this, read the two primary sources yourself: the Watchtower of March 1, 1981 (pp. 24-26) and the Watchtower of July 15, 2013 (p. 22), so you can say in your own words what each one teaches about who the slave is. Then read Matthew 24:45-51 straight on into chapter 25 so you can show it is one of four lessons about readiness, and learn 1 Peter 4:10 by heart. Practise asking 'How can the same belief be apostasy in 1981 and truth in 2012?' aloud, gently and without triumph. Expect Proverbs 4:18, and be ready to say it describes the path of the righteous person, not an organisation reversing itself.
