# Christ Is Already Reigning

*Acts 2:30-36 / Ephesians 1:20-22 / 1 Corinthians 15:25*

## Doorstep Question

> "Is Jesus the King right now — today — or is He still waiting to become King? The Watchtower teaches that Jesus began ruling in 1914 but only over a heavenly kingdom, and that His earthly rule is still future. But Peter said at Pentecost that God raised Jesus and "seated Him on David's throne" (Acts 2:30) — and Paul wrote that God "seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority" (Ephesians 1:20-21). How much higher does He need to go?"

## JW Claim

Jesus was enthroned as King of God's Kingdom in 1914. However, His rule currently
extends only over the heavenly government and Jehovah's earthly organisation.
The full extent of His Kingdom will not be realised until after Armageddon
destroys the wicked and the thousand-year reign begins. Until then, Satan still
has significant power over the earth and its nations.

## Strategy

This argument stacks four clear NT declarations that Christ is ALREADY reigning in supreme authority. The cumulative weight is hard to resist because each text says "now," not "later."
1. Start with Acts 2:30-36 — Peter at Pentecost. Read together: God raised Jesus "to sit on his throne" (v. 30); "God has made him both Lord and Christ" (v. 36). Ask: "Did Peter say Jesus WILL sit on His throne, or that God raised Him TO sit on it?" The answer is clear — enthronement has already happened.
2. Turn to Ephesians 1:20-22. God "raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion." Ask: "Is there any authority higher than 'far above ALL rule'? If Jesus is far above ALL authority NOW, what is left for a future enthronement to add?"
3. Turn to 1 Corinthians 15:25: "He MUST REIGN until He has put all His enemies under His feet." The reigning is present and ongoing. The subjection of enemies is the process, not the precondition. Christ reigns NOW and will continue to reign UNTIL every enemy is defeated — the last being death (v. 26).
4. Close with Matthew 28:18: "All authority in heaven and on earth HAS BEEN GIVEN to me." Past tense. Done. Not "will be given after Armageddon."
5. Tie it together: "If Jesus already has ALL authority (Matthew 28:18), is already seated FAR ABOVE all rule (Ephesians 1:21), is already on David's throne (Acts 2:30), and MUST REIGN until all enemies are under His feet (1 Cor 15:25) — what exactly is left for the Watchtower's future kingdom to accomplish that Christ's present reign has not already begun?"

## Key Insight

Four NT passages declare Christ's reign as a present reality, not a future event: Acts 2:30 (seated on David's throne), Ephesians 1:20-22 (far above all authority), 1 Corinthians 15:25 (He must reign until), Matthew 28:18 (all authority has been given). Deferring His kingdom to the future contradicts the apostles.

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "Jesus is ruling, but only in heaven. His kingdom hasn't been extended to the earth yet."

**Counter:** Matthew 28:18 says "all authority in heaven AND ON EARTH has been given to me." Not just heaven — earth too. And Ephesians 1:22 says God "put all things under His feet" — that is comprehensive. The distinction between a heavenly rule and an earthly rule is one the text does not make.

### Response 2

**JW says:** "If Christ is already ruling, why is there still suffering and evil?"

**Counter:** Because 1 Corinthians 15:25 says He MUST REIGN UNTIL He has put all enemies under His feet. The reign is real; the subjection of enemies is progressive. A king who is putting down a rebellion is still king — the rebellion does not cancel the coronation. Christ was crowned at the resurrection. The campaign continues until "the last enemy, death, is destroyed" (v. 26).

### Response 3

**JW says:** "Acts 2:30 is about Jesus' resurrection, not His kingship."

**Counter:** Read the verse again: God raised Jesus "to sit on his throne." The resurrection and the enthronement are linked. Peter's entire sermon builds to the climax in verse 36: "God has made him both Lord and Christ." Peter is telling the crowd that the resurrection IS the enthronement — Jesus is King NOW.

### Response 4

**JW says:** "Acts 2:36 says "God made him both Lord and Christ." If God had to make him Lord, he can't be Jehovah, who never became anything. He's Lord the way David was, a king on David's throne (Luke 1:32)."

**Counter:** He is David's heir, yes, but read the verse just before. Peter says David "did not ascend to the heavens, but he himself says, 'Jehovah said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand"'" (Acts 2:34). David calls his own descendant "my Lord." No king of Israel was ever lord over David. And "made" can't mean Jesus only began to be Lord at that point, because the angel announced at his birth "a savior, who is Christ the Lord" (Luke 2:11). What happened at the resurrection was public installation: he was "with power declared God's Son... by means of resurrection from the dead" (Romans 1:4), seated at the right hand. Now watch which Lord Peter means. He opened the sermon with Joel: "everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will be saved" (Acts 2:21). He closes by telling them to be baptised "in the name of Jesus Christ" (2:38), and Paul applies the same Joel promise to Jesus in Romans 10:9-13. So the Lord whose name saves in Joel is the Lord whom God has now enthroned. Philippians 2:6-9 shows the same pattern: he existed in God's form, humbled himself, and was then exalted. In this sermon, whose name are the people told to call on to be saved?

## What to Avoid

Do not imply that there is no future dimension to Christ's kingdom. There is a consummation at His return (1 Cor 15:24, 28). The point is that the reign began at the ascension, not in 1914 and not after Armageddon. Focus on "already," not "only already."

## Homework

Read Acts 2 from verse 22 to 36 and Ephesians 1 from verse 15 to the end, until you can trace from memory how Peter moves from resurrection to enthronement and Paul from resurrection to "far above all rule and authority". Memorise Matthew 28:18 and 1 Corinthians 15:25-26. Look up each of these in the NWT on jw.org, checking whether Matthew 28:18 keeps the past tense "has been given", and read what jw.org says about when Christ began ruling. Practise the doorstep question aloud — "Is Jesus the King right now?" — and let the silence work. Prepare for "Jesus is ruling, but only in heaven": answer with "in heaven and on earth" from Matthew 28:18, while affirming the future consummation in 1 Corinthians 15:24-28.
