# You Must Be Born Again

*John 3:3 — Not Just for 144,000*

## Doorstep Question

> "Jesus said "unless someone is born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God." He didn't say "unless you're one of the 144,000." Have you personally been born again?"

## JW Claim

Being "born again" applies only to the 144,000 anointed Christians who
will rule in heaven with Christ. The "great crowd" of Jehovah's Witnesses
have an earthly hope and do not need to be born again. Most Witnesses
today are part of the great crowd, not the anointed.

## Strategy

Read John 3:3-7 together. Jesus says "unless SOMEONE" (Greek: tis — anyone) is born again, they cannot see God's kingdom. He doesn't limit this to a special class. Then connect to 1 John 5:1 — "Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God." The word "everyone" (pas) leaves no room for a two-class system. Ask gently: "Does your organisation teach you that you've been born again? If not, Jesus says you can't see God's kingdom."

## Key Insight

Jesus made the new birth a universal requirement for entering God's kingdom — not a special privilege for an elite class. If a JW hasn't been born again, by Jesus' own words they cannot enter the kingdom.

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "Jesus was speaking to Nicodemus, who was a potential member of the anointed class."

**Counter:** Jesus doesn't say "you, Nicodemus, must be born again." He says "unless SOMEONE is born again" — it's a universal statement. And Nicodemus was a Pharisee before Pentecost — the anointed/great crowd distinction didn't exist yet. Jesus is teaching a principle for all people.

### Response 2

**JW says:** "The great crowd has an earthly hope, not a heavenly one."

**Counter:** Even in the Watchtower's framework, the great crowd must "see" or "enter" God's kingdom (John 3:3, 5). Jesus doesn't say "born again to go to heaven" — he says born again to see God's KINGDOM. If the kingdom governs the earth, you still need to be born again to be part of it.

### Response 3

**JW says:** "1 John 5:1 refers to the anointed Christians of the first century."

**Counter:** The verse says "EVERYONE who believes" — pas ho pisteuon. That's a present tense, universal statement. John doesn't say "everyone who believed in the first century." The same letter says "these things I write to you so that you may know you HAVE eternal life" (1 John 5:13). Do you have eternal life? Then you've been born again.

## What to Avoid

Don't mock the JW for not being born again — this can be a genuinely unsettling realisation. Be gentle. The goal is to plant the question: "Have I been born again? Jesus says I must be."

## Homework

Read John 3:3 in its setting, from Nicodemus's arrival at night to verse 8, until you can retell the conversation from memory, then read 1 John 5:1 and 5:13. Notice that Jesus says 'unless someone', not 'unless you, Nicodemus'. Check the NWT wording of John 3:3 and 1 John 5:1 so you can show both in their own Bible. Practise the doorstep question aloud, gently, remembering that wondering whether you have been born again can be deeply unsettling. Expect 'Nicodemus was a potential member of the anointed'; rehearse the reply that Jesus stated a universal principle, before Pentecost, when no anointed and great-crowd distinction yet existed.
