Responding to Jehovah's Witnesses

Lying to the Spirit Is Lying to God
Acts 5:3-4
Holy Spirit Very Strong Tone-safe
Doorstep Question
"In , Peter says Ananias lied to the Holy Spirit. In verse 4, he says 'You have played false, not to men, but to God.' How do you lie to an impersonal force? And why does Peter equate the Spirit with God? "
JW Claim

The Holy Spirit is God's active force — like electricity or wind. It is not
a person and not God. Peter was saying Ananias lied to God through the
Spirit, not that the Spirit is God.

Strategy

Open the NWT to . Verse 3: Ananias 'played false to the holy spirit.' Verse 4: 'You have played false, not to men, but to God.' Peter identifies lying to the Spirit AS lying to God. The logical connection is: Spirit = God. Two questions to ask: (1) Can you lie to electricity? Can you deceive gravity? Lying requires a personal being who can be deceived. If the Spirit is just a force, the concept of lying to it makes no sense. (2) Why does Peter equate the Spirit with God? If the Spirit is merely God's force, Peter would say 'You lied to God through his force.' Instead, he says lying to the Spirit IS lying to God — because the Spirit is God.

Key Insight

You can only lie to a person. Peter says Ananias lied to the Holy Spirit, then equates that with lying to God. The Spirit is personal and divine.

Likely JW Response 1

Ananias lied to God through the Spirit — the Spirit carried the lie to God.

Your Counter

But that's not what Peter says. He doesn't say 'You lied to God through the Spirit.' He says you lied TO the Spirit (v3), and then identifies that as lying to God (v4). The two statements are parallel — lying to the Spirit and lying to God are the same act because the Spirit is God. If the Spirit were merely a communication channel, Peter's logic would be: 'You lied to the telephone, not to men, but to God.' That makes no sense.

Likely JW Response 2

The Spirit is God's power at work in the apostles — lying to the apostles was lying to God.

Your Counter

If Peter meant 'you lied to us apostles,' he could have said that. But he specifically names the Holy Spirit as the one lied to, then separately says 'not to men.' Peter distinguishes between lying to men (the apostles) and lying to the Spirit (God). If the Spirit were merely God's power in the apostles, Peter's distinction collapses.

Likely JW Response 3

This passage doesn't prove the Spirit is a person — it's just a figure of speech.

Your Counter

Lying is inherently personal. You cannot lie to a force, a power, or an influence. You can only lie to someone who has a mind that can be deceived. Peter's language assumes the Spirit has personhood — the capacity to be the object of deception. Combined with other passages where the Spirit speaks (), can be grieved (), has a mind (), and makes decisions (), the evidence for personhood is overwhelming.

What to Avoid

Don't jump straight to 'the Trinity.' Start with the simple observation: lying to the Spirit = lying to God. Let the JW sit with that equation.

Homework to Assign

Read :11 so you know the whole story around Ananias, then commit to memory. In the NWT, confirm that verse 3 says Ananias "played false to the holy spirit" and verse 4 says "not to men, but to God." Practise asking the doorstep question aloud, keeping it to the simple point that you can only lie to a person. Prepare for the reply that Ananias lied to God "through" the Spirit, and have , , and ready for the wider personhood case.
