The Natural Man Cannot Discern Spiritual Things

1 Corinthians 2:14 — Why Research Alone Won't Save You
Salvation Strong
Doorstep Question
"Paul writes, "The natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned." If that's true, how can an unregenerate person decide their way into the truth by studying the Bible? Doesn't the spiritual birth have to come first, before the discernment is possible? "
JW Claim

JW evangelism assumes the seeker can "research" their way to truth — read
the publications, compare them with the Bible, weigh the evidence, make an
informed decision. "You wouldn't buy a car without researching it." This
framing puts unregenerate human reasoning in the driver's seat of salvation.
Paul says unregenerate human reasoning is precisely what cannot receive
spiritual truth in the first place.

Strategy

Read slowly. Ask: "What does Paul say the natural man CAN'T do?" (Receive, accept, understand the things of the Spirit.) "Why not?" (They are spiritually discerned — and he is natural, not spiritual.) Then ask: "How does someone become spiritual rather than natural?" That puts the conversation on Jesus' answer to Nicodemus: you must be born again (). And the new birth is a work of God (), not the result of research. The whole JW evangelistic approach collapses into the question: have YOU been born again? If not, by your own epistemic lights you can't evaluate what's true.

Key Insight

JW epistemology is upside-down. They say "research and decide." Paul says "first be born of the Spirit, then you can discern." The new birth isn't the reward at the end of a successful research project — it's the precondition that makes spiritual research possible at all.

Likely JW Response 1

That verse is about deep spiritual mysteries, not the basic gospel. Anyone can understand 'God's kingdom' if they study.

Your Counter

Paul doesn't draw that distinction. The context is Paul preaching the gospel itself — "Jesus Christ and him crucified" (1 Cor 2:2). The "wisdom of God" he says the natural man cannot accept is the cross. If the cross is folly to the natural man (1 Cor 1:18), then the foundational gospel is precisely what research alone cannot deliver.

Likely JW Response 2

But we're all natural men until we study — that's why we encourage Bible study.

Your Counter

Paul's point is that natural men CAN'T receive spiritual things — even when they study. The change from natural to spiritual is the new birth (), not academic exposure. A dead man doesn't read his way to life (). He needs to be made alive. That's what Jesus called being born again, and that's the missing piece in the JW pathway — the Spirit's regenerating work, not the organisation's study course.

Likely JW Response 3

If nobody can understand without the new birth, then evangelism is pointless.

Your Counter

Not at all — the gospel is the instrument God uses to give the new birth ( — "born again... through the living and abiding word of God"). We preach because God uses the preached word to raise the dead. That's why you can be out here sharing at all — not because you persuade someone's reason, but because God uses the gospel to quicken dead hearts. That's also why Jesus said not everyone who hears will believe — only his sheep hear his voice ().

What to Avoid

Don't argue for total depravity as a philosophical position. Just walk through Paul's actual words and ask what they require. The JW's own framework of "study and decide" either submits to Paul here or contradicts him — let them sit with the dilemma.

Homework to Assign

Read :16 as one unit until you can explain from memory that what the natural man cannot accept is the message of Christ crucified (2:2), not some advanced mystery. Then read and on the new birth. Check how the NWT renders "natural man" and "spiritually discerned" in . Practise the doorstep question aloud, ending on "Doesn't the spiritual birth have to come first?" Prepare for "If nobody can understand without the new birth, evangelism is pointless": memorise — born again through the living and abiding word of God — so you can show why preaching matters all the more.
