# The 1975 Armageddon Prediction

*Deuteronomy 18:20–22 / Matthew 24:36*

## Doorstep Question

> "In 1974, your Kingdom Ministry commended brothers who were selling their homes and pioneering because of 'the short time remaining before the wicked world's end.' After 1975 came and went, the Watchtower said those brothers had been 'running ahead.' Who bears responsibility when people act on what the organisation itself told them to do?"

## JW Claim

Jehovah's Witnesses do not claim to be prophets. Some individual members
became overly enthusiastic about 1975 and read too much into what was
published. The organisation never definitively said Armageddon would come
in 1975.

## Strategy

Focus on ONE publication at a time — the Kingdom Ministry May 1974 quote is the strongest single piece of evidence because it shows the organisation commending the very behaviour it later blamed on individuals. Ask: 'Would you like to see what your Kingdom Ministry actually said?' Then show them the quote. Let them sit with the cognitive dissonance.
If they are open, gently introduce Deuteronomy 18:20–22, which even the NWT renders clearly: 'When the prophet speaks in the name of Jehovah and the word is not fulfilled or does not come true, then Jehovah did not speak that word.' Then point out that their own Watchtower (April 1, 1972, p. 197) identified the organisation as the modern-day 'prophet' commissioned by Jehovah.
Do not dump all five failed dates at once. Use 1975 as the doorstep example, then suggest they research 1914 and 1925 on their own. The goal is to plant a question, not to win a debate.
Matthew 24:36 is a powerful complement — even the NWT says 'nobody knows' the day or hour, 'not even the Son, but only the Father.' If Jehovah himself says the timing is unknowable, how could any organisation claim to have calculated it?

## Key Insight

The Watchtower's own publications created the 1975 expectation, commended those who acted on it, and then blamed individuals when it failed. That is not imperfect understanding — it is a failure of accountability that Deuteronomy 18 was designed to expose.

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "Those were just expectations, not prophecies."

**Counter:** The Watchtower itself called their chronology 'trustworthy Bible chronology' (Watchtower, October 15, 1966, p. 629). The Kingdom Ministry commended those who sold their homes based on it. And in 1972, the Watchtower identified the organisation as a modern-day 'prophet.' If it walks like a prophecy and the organisation calls itself a prophet, on what basis is it not a prophecy?

### Response 2

**JW says:** "We never said 1975 was definite."

**Counter:** The Watchtower published an article titled 'Why Are You Looking Forward to 1975?' (August 15, 1968). That title presupposes that readers should be looking forward to it. The article argued the difference between Adam's creation and the end of 6,000 years 'might be only a difference of weeks or months, not years.' That is as close to definite as language allows without using the exact word.

### Response 3

**JW says:** "The light gets brighter — Proverbs 4:18."

**Counter:** Read Proverbs 4:18 in context. It contrasts the path of the righteous with the path of the wicked (verse 19). It is about moral living, not doctrinal revision. Even if it were about doctrine, true light adds to what came before — it does not contradict it. A prediction that fails is not dimmer light becoming brighter. It is darkness dressed as light.

### Response 4

**JW says:** "We are imperfect humans; only Jehovah is perfect."

**Counter:** Agreed — all humans are imperfect. But Deuteronomy 18:20–22 does not require perfection from prophets. It requires that their words come true. The standard is not unreasonable — it is God's own test. If the organisation claims to speak for Jehovah, it has voluntarily submitted itself to that standard.

### Response 5

**JW says:** "Some brothers may have been over-eager about 1975, but the organisation never made a definitive prediction."

**Counter:** After 1975 failed, there was a 4-year silence before any acknowledgment. Membership declined — this, not conscience, prompted the partial 1980 admission. Even then, the blame was placed on individual members for "reading too much into" the dates, despite the Watchtower and Kingdom Ministry having explicitly promoted the expectation. Raymond Franz documented the internal discussions: the leadership knew the excitement was organisationally generated but chose to blame the rank-and-file.

## What to Avoid

Do not call the organisation a 'false prophet' directly — let Deuteronomy 18 speak for itself and let the Witness draw their own conclusion. Do not mock or belittle anyone who lived through 1975 and sacrificed because of it. Many current Witnesses have parents or grandparents who gave up careers, education, and retirement savings. Approach with compassion, not triumph. Do not list all five failed dates at the door — save the pattern for a follow-up conversation.

## Homework

Look up Kingdom Ministry, May 1974. Then look up The Watchtower, March 15, 1980, pages 17–18, where the organisation partially admitted it had contributed to the buildup of hopes around 1975. Ask yourself: if it took five years to admit partial responsibility, and members were blamed in the meantime, what does that tell you about accountability?
